History

The Military Assistance Project was established in 2011 to provide free legal services for active duty, reserve component, or veteran military personnel and their widows/spouses in the form of pro bono consumer law services. The MAP client base includes a significant percentage of wounded service members and veterans. MAP has served clients in PA, NJ, DE, NY, VA, CA, TX, FL, KS, CO, and ND, among other states. We serve all branches, include spouses and widows, and accept clients with every level of military discharge.

In today’s challenging economic climate, which has coincided with the explosion of the veteran population since 9/11, the chance for a financial and legal fresh start is particularly vital to improving the quality of life for our service members and veterans. We assist service members and veterans with navigating a complex legal system which in many critical ways is not designed to address the unique circumstances of their lives.

Since its inception, MAP has served nearly 1000 clients and assisted in discharging approximately $10 million in debt for United States service members and veterans.  MAP is one of the few independent legal service nonprofits in the country dedicated solely to military personnel and veterans. Our work is varied, and includes filing Chapter 7 bankruptcies, helping active duty soldiers protect their security clearances, marking IRS accounts non-collectible for veterans who cannot obtain employment, making Offers in Compromise on past due IRS liabilities, and other assorted consumer law representation. In 2016, we have expanded our legal services even further, and are proud to share the news that MAP can now assist clients with veterans administrative law issues (primarily, discharge upgrades and benefit appeals) in addition to our core consumer law assistance.
